Undergraduate Job

The Center for Shock Wave-processing of Advanced Reactive Materials (C-SWARM), c-swarm.nd.edu, is a newly established center of the emerging field of predictive science. The main mission of C-SWARM is to predict shock conditions under which new materials can be synthesized using predictive computational models that are verified and validated with quantified uncertainty on future high-performance Exascale computer platforms

The Computational Physics Group is devoted to solving phase-averaged macro-continuum equations with constitutive law provided by results obtained from full simulations of the multi-phase mixture using micro-continuum equations. We will refer to codes that solve macro-and micro-problems as M&m codes.

Responsibilities:

The undergraduate student will work in close collaboration with Professors and Research Staff from the Computational Physics Group.

This will involve:

  • Exploring conditions for synthesis of phases/compounds and provide predictions of non-equilibrium structures that will form under shock wave-processing.
  • Use of a Wavelet Adaptive Multiscale Representation (WAMR) solver to balance equations for mass, momenta, and energy in Eulerian form.
  • Use of a high performance library (PGFem3D) to compute the multiscale constitutive responses of the heterogeneous reactive materials through the generalized computational theory of homogenization (GCTH)
